Archiving our Past and Future: Laois County Digital Archives

The County Library & Archives Service is custodian of collections of documents, books and memorabilia, all of which enhance the local history and culture of Laois for its citizens, and the digital archive promotes these collections now and in the future. It also facilitates the promotion of Laois and its culture, history and to a wider population including the Diaspora .

The Archives Service holds collections of both public and private records pertaining to Laois. The project began in 2018 to create an online platform to ensure wide access to the records for researchers and historians with research and evaluation on the appropriate software for the scanning, storage, display and retrieval of the digitized archives of County Laois.

This year the site will be further enhanced with customisations for the storing of media, such as old film/video and spoken work /audio files enabling users to listen and watch these unique Laois records remotely .

This online repository and platform contains Workhouse records, County Council Minute books 1913-1933, archival and rare Laois Maps, archives of Helen Roe, Petty Session registers, Archives of the Portlaoise Technical School, the Scully and Redmond Collections, and large collections of local photographs which have been donated to the library service over the last number of years.

Please note that the details of events listed above are provided by the relevant Local Authorities.
