Cafe Link, past present and future

Cafe Link plans to co-produce a documentary with staff, service users, and a local filmmaker to tell its story from its founding to its future. Established in 1994 as a training café for adults with intellectual disabilities, it expanded in 2004 to provide paid employment. After the original café closed in 2020, it reopened as a training centre.

Since then, the organisation has grown significantly, with support from the HSE, Rethink Ireland, and Galway City Council helping to expand employment, improve services, and prepare for a new café in Ballybane opening in 2026. This new site will combine paid work with structured training programmes.

The documentary will be shaped by participants’ lived experiences and will highlight both long-term and new members. It will conclude with a public screening event at the PorterShed, hosted by Cafe Link.
