This year, we want to bring the best of Galway’s vibrant music scene to residents of all of Galway City’s care homes. Launching in the month of May for Bealtaine Festival, musicians playing trad, folk, jazz, country, bluegrass and other popular styles, will perform intimate concerts for older people in five care homes across Galway City.
Musicians have been selected for the quality of their music, range of their styles, and experience playing in community settings. Building on our experience leading two successful Creativity in Older Age projects last year—Ceol na Cuimhní / Music of Memories, and Cupan Ceoil / Tea Dances—Galway City Council want to extend the positive benefits of live music to residents of private sector care homes, reducing the impact of isolation and loneliness and supporting older people on a pleasant journey of reminiscence through beloved songs and recollection, while simultaneously promoting the grace, wisdom and self-fulfilment of positive ageing.
Over 200 residents will enjoy a different weekly musical performance across the summer months. Consultation sessions with residents run by Age Friendly and Healthy Ireland Programme Coordinators, in collaboration with healthcare staff, ensure musical performances are tailored to the residents' interests, with musical acts selected for their wide stylistic range.
