Clara: Five Tutorial Samplers - Stitching Heritage & Innovation

This project aims to merge historical research with artistic practice by researching the life and legacy of Ann Jellicoe and the Goodbody family and teaching the skills of embroidery and doll-making, and explore the possibility of creating a meaningful and empowering community-driven initiative that honours the past, while fostering creativity for the future.

Anne Jellicoe is a well-known pioneer in advocating for female education and better working conditions for women. She was born in Mountmellick about 200 years ago, and moved to Clara in 1848 where she, along with the Quaker Goodbody family, established a lace and embroidery factory to provide work for women.

This mini incubator project will explore the history of Ann Jellicoe, her artistic and cultural contributions, and the influence of her and the Goodbody family on Clara's industrial and social history. Through a unique collaboration between Embroidery Artist Dolores Dempsey and Visual Artist and Doll-maker Teresa Doyle, creative skills will be merged to tutor members of the Clara community through a series of six collaborative working meetups, where creative experimentation will be encouraged and fostered, and traditional techniques will be blended with contemporary artistic interpretations. This initiative will also be rooted in the principles of place-making and social engagement, with the aim of engaging and empowering the Clara community through this unique blend of history and creativity.
