Clayton's Woollen Mills, Navan - Archives

Clayton’s Woollen Mills operated in Navan from 1867 until its closure in the 1960s. During that time, it was a major employer in the town and its records have the potential to contribute to an understanding of industrial, social, business and local history.

The extensive collection is in the care of the county archive and library service. Work on the collection is ongoing with support from the wider culture team in Meath County Council.

The priorities in 2022 are to ensure the conservation of 18 bound volumes and the further listing of sets of individual documents. This listing would be a defined set of records, likely series of business correspondence.

The cataloguing of the correspondence to item level will give a much fuller picture of life at the Mill and will form an integral part of any future outreach projects.

Going forward into 2023/24 once the collection is stable and accessible it will be possible to build on this with a digitization project and outreach projects, including exhibition. The Navan & District Historical Society will be key stakeholders in the development of outreach projects.

Please note that the details of events listed above are provided by the relevant Local Authorities.
