The aim of the project, (Water Paths Mayfly Flag in NY) is to create awareness and publicity co-created with communities of interest, exploring themes and shared narratives around the life and ecology of our rivers.
The Mayfly flag project, designed by artists Deirdre Power and Chelsea Canavan, was selected for The Flag Project, a global event in New York City supported by the Rockefeller Center, The Climate Museum and the United Nations Environment. The Mayfly will be raised over the iconic Rockefeller Center Rink during Earth Day Celebrations.
Inspired by recent commissions (Eco Showboat & the School of Looking) and community projects the artists have being invested since 2019, the design reflects the short lived aquatic insect of the northern hemisphere, the ephemeral Mayfly. The flag fashions an interconnected creative resonance between oceans in relation to the fragility of freshwater habitats and ecologies found around the world.
