Disert: Investigating the Arch Enclosure
A new two-week archaeological excavation at Disert has been approved by the National Monuments Service. The aim is to investigate the ‘arch enclosure’ and to place this in its wider cultural and landscape context. The excavation will be directed by Dr Fiona Beglane, supported by Dr Marion Dowd, both of ATU Sligo, and by Dr René Vellanoweth of California State University LA. As well as ATU Sligo students, some from overseas, it is anticipated that up to fifteen community volunteers will be able to participate. They will be involved in both the excavation, and in a further week of laboratory work cataloguing and preparing the samples and artefacts for analysis by specialists.
