Dragging Up the Past
Dragging Up The Past: Mosaic Mural Project is a collaborative community arts initiative led by the Gay Project, supporting members of Cork City’s LGBTI+ community to explore identity, creativity and wellbeing through participatory visual arts.
Delivered through a series of inclusive workshops, participants will develop skills in tile mosaic while engaging in creative storytelling inspired by drag culture and local history. Guided by artist Vitor Oliveira, the programme will provide a welcoming space for connection, collaboration and self-expression, particularly for those with little or no prior artistic experience.
Participants will create individual mosaic pieces before working together on a large-scale public mural celebrating the legacy of iconic drag performer Danny La Rue. This shared creative process will foster confidence, strengthen community bonds, and promote pride and visibility within the LGBTI+ community.
The project will culminate in the installation of a public artwork in Cork city centre, contributing to a more inclusive and vibrant cultural landscape. By enabling participants to actively shape and share their own stories, Dragging Up The Past highlights the importance of creative expression in building wellbeing, community connection, and a shared sense of place.
