Drawing as a Universal Language: Pictionary for Schools

Drawing as a Universal Language is an innovative and interactive drawing and language programme for primary school children. The programme aims to help Ukrainian and other children whose first language is not English to share common experience with English speaking Children through the medium of art.

Artist David Begley will work with children in a fun and interactive way to develop the ability to think creatively and visually. Children will learn how to draw in line, tone and pattern with homemade charcoal. They will learn words in Ukrainian (and other relevant languages) and English by matching these words to their drawings. Children’s charcoal drawings will be collected and published to create a Multilingual - English Pictionary; a book / booklet which will be made available to schools, and to families through Wexford libraries.

The workshops will foster creativity, visual thinking, common understanding and empathy. English speaking children will gain an understanding of the challenges faced by Ukrainian children in learning a new alphabet and language. Children of all nationalities will learn through drawing, writing, listening and speaking.

The project is coordinated by Wexford Arts Centre in partnership with the Arts Department, Wexford County Council and Creative Ireland.
