Guth Gafa meaning ‘captive voice’ is Ireland’s largest independent documentary film festival. It focuses on showcasing the latest award-winning International and Irish documentary films on thought-provoking subjects, and promoting the art of great story-telling, through film, to rural Irish communities.

The main film strand for the 14th Guth Gafa Festival will be the environment, a range of hard-hitting films complemented by the addition of a diverse selection of lighter Irish and international documentaries – we believe in having fun while we change society!

Guth Gafa is riding the crest of a wave of creativity in County Meath that has seen an informal coalition of arts organisations, government departments and private stakeholders moving to establish Kells as a centre of excellence for arts and culture. This wide-ranging partnership comprises the Arts and Heritage departments and officers of Meath County Council, the Guth Gafa and Hinterland Festivals, the Type Trail, Soilsiú Films, Kells Local Heroes, and other committed private individuals.

Due to and in response to Covid19, in 2020 the priority is festival sustainability into 2021 and beyond. A Covid adapted Guth Gafa 2020 will take place as an online event.
