Hazelwood Sculpture Restoration Project
This is a unique local project, which sets out to restore two of the original Hazelwood Sculpture Trail Sculptures from the 1985 original symposium. This was a major tourist and local attraction in its time, formed by a symposium of artists including Jackie Mc Kenna, who will be involved in the delivery of this project. The project will have three strands:
• The restoration of two of the remaining Hazelwood wooden sculptor pieces.
• Filming a short documentary, outlining the history of the Hazelwood sculpture trail and documenting the restoration and craftsmanship by artists undertaking the restoration of both sculpture pieces.
• A call-out to the community, to submit their memories and photographs from the Sculpture Trail, to form a collage and archive to enrich the project. This will be submitted to Sligo Library and published for open access. The sculptures, when completed, will be installed on exhibition to the public, either within Hazelwood this summer, in their original context and location, or indoors, in a suitable venue, such as the Model Gallery, with agreement. This will create a free attraction for both the local community, who have rich memories of the project and visitors alike. A unique piece of RTÉ archive footage, filmed by local man, Tommie Gorman, in 1985, captures the original project:
