Here We Are Again Still

Here We Are Again Still, written by playwright Christian O’Reilly, is an important work of participatory community theatre, set in the Walter Macken Flats in Mervue and involving residents at the time. It was commissioned by then Public Art Officer Megs Morley through the Per Cent for Art scheme on the occasion of major refurbishment work of the housing complex.

The play explores themes of social isolation, loneliness and the importance of community. 15 years after it was first performed in the community, Galway City’s Culture & Creativity Team, in collaboration with Christian O’Reilly and COPE Galway’s Sonas Day Centre, are returning with the original cast to perform a reading of the play for local residents. This performance will provide a catalyst for reflecting on what has changed and remained the same. While many of the original participants have moved on, the themes of the play—social isolation, loneliness and the importance of community are still as relevant now as they were 15 years ago.

This performance will be followed by a community discussion and workshop, with the aim of instigating a new programme of creative activity with the current residents of the Walter Macken Flats.
