The Hinterland Festival began life as the Hay/Kells Festival in 2013, in collaboration with the Hay (Wales) Literary Festival. In 2017 it evolved into Hinterland and has now run numerous events under this name. Now celebrating it's 10th year it's guests have included all the leading Irish fiction writers (Colm Tóibín, Sebastian Barry, Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright, Joseph O’Connor, John Boyne, Liz Nugent) and a number of major UK writers and artists (Germaine Greer, Jung Chang, Jeremy Paxman, Brian Eno, Ben Okri, Hanif Kureishi, Jeannette Winterson, Louis de Bernières).
Hinterland 2023 returns with a bumper programme. Taking Place June 22nd – 25th with exciting events from national and international artists including The Bad Bridget: Leanne McCormick and Elaine Farrell, John Boyne, Colin Bateman, Bill Whelan, Liz Nugent, Lisa Lambe, Shane Hegarty, Roger McGough, Tommie Gorman, Fintan O’Toole, Maria Conlon McKenna, Nerys Williams, Joesph O’Connor and Pulitzer Prize winner Richard ford and many more.
