Homing Friends
Homing Friends is a public art installation located on Bull Lane in Portlaoise and forms part of artist Patrick Murphy’s international Belonging collection. The display features a series of sculptural pigeons, including Portlaoise’s first gold pigeon, which was designed to reflect and catch the sunlight. The project was funded through Creative Ireland Laois’ Heritage through Art Grant Scheme and delivered in partnership with Downtown Portlaoise, adding a distinctive and engaging artwork to the town centre.
The installation explores themes of connection, belonging and the relationship between people and place. Inspired by the historic role of carrier pigeons, it draws parallels between traditional methods of communication and today’s digital connectivity, while also highlighting the presence of nature within urban environments. The pigeons serve as symbols of peace, loyalty, freedom, luck and prosperity, encouraging residents and visitors to reflect on community, heritage and the importance of maintaining connections in an increasingly interconnected world.
