Made in Laois - Voodoo: a community engaged film production

Actor and filmmaker Emmet Byrne is creating a short film 'Voodoo' in the County Laois's Timahoe and Cullenagh hinterland in the spring of 2023. As a means of involving local young people in the production, Emmet is facilitating drama workshops with children in Timahoe National School and with the local Foróige club in Timahoe's community hall.

With the younger children workshops begin with simple and fun, physical and vocal warm ups, followed with a variety of games to increase energy and focus. The workshops also include ensemble exercises where children learn to work together through basic stage games, creating animals for themselves - learning about each others crazy creatures and working in groups as  part of the herd, predator or prey!! The workshop is completed with simple scenes for children to act out as if real actors from films and a children's film demonstrating some of the ideas learned  during the workshop.

Young adults from the Foróige club workshop includes warm up exercises as well as routines with circuit games to bring up energy levels and increase focus, and intricate ensemble exercises aimed at increasing awareness in working as a group.

In late Spring 2023 a screening of 'Voodoo' will be held in the Timahoe community hall with a cast and crew Q&A.

Supported by the Made in Laois 'co-create' grant scheme for co-creation and collaborative initiatives that contribute to creative and cultural activities within Laois.
