Making an Edwardian skirt for Bloomsday

The Edwardian skirt silhouette is difficult to replicate with modern clothes. This course of six sessions for non-beginners will culminate in each participant making an Edwardian skirt that can form part of a Bloomsday costume.

This draws on the heritage of Ulysses, life in early 20th century Dublin, fashion heritage and women’s self-sufficiency. Volunteers at the Joyce Tower, members of local craft and active retirement clubs were invited to participate, alongside students from IADT and Sallynoggin College of Further Education who assisted the tutor.

The project will focus on cutting and sewing a fully lined, made‑to‑measure walking skirt, using historically informed construction methods. Due to the technical nature of the project, participation is limited to a maximum of ten people. Participants are required to have prior machine‑sewing experience and a good working knowledge of garment assembly.
