Our Shared Habitat: Exploring Biodiversity, Wellbeing and Belonging Through Student-Led Mural-Making
Our Shared Habitat is a collaborative mural project led by visual artist Blanca (Libertadrice) with Transition Year students at Scoil Bernadette Special School in Cork City. Exploring the idea of habitat as both a natural ecosystem and a place where people feel safe, valued and able to thrive, the project will support students to co-design and create a permanent mural in the school's courtyard.
Through a series of accessible and inclusive workshops, students will explore themes of biodiversity, care, wellbeing and belonging while developing skills in visual storytelling and mural-making. The creative process is designed to ensure that students' ideas directly shape the artwork, providing meaningful opportunities for participation and self-expression through visual, verbal and non-verbal forms of communication.
Inspired by students' learning about wildlife, habitats and caring for the natural world, the mural will feature imagery drawn from nature alongside creative interpretations of safety, growth and connection. The finished artwork will transform the courtyard, a space used daily for learning, reflection and recreation, into a vibrant shared environment that celebrates both biodiversity and community.
