Rebel Streets 2021: Street Art

Cork Community Artlink and the Traveller Visibility Group (TVG) partnered to create an impactful large scale mural on the facade of the TVG Headquarters in Cork City. This project provided an opportunity for an intergenerational community to express their perspectives on life in the travelling community through a combination of symbols, words, and imagery.

Traditionally, traveller groups have been depicted with images such as horses, barrel top carts, boxing etc. Young travellers worked with Cork Community Artlink and older members of their community in Cork to depict their history through contemporary representations alongside the traditional cultural imagery. The resulting artwork is a reflection of their identity, dreams, and reality.

The mural was developed and designed through consultation sessions with TVG Community Development Workers, youth people and users of the building including parents of children attending creche.

On 12th June 2021, young people experimented with graffiti and street art techniques facilitated by Cork Community Art Link to coincide with Cruinniú na nÓg.

The mural was complete at the end of June 2021.
