This collaborative project with Bailey and Blake will see local historians, academics and historical sites used to present a fascinating portrait of Richard Butler. Even the manner in which Richard claimed his inheritance on the death of his distant relative, the 10th Lord Cahir, was subject to great intrigue. 

Once their position was secure, Richard and Lady Emily became aristocratic celebrities during the early 19th century. Their considerable wealth and youthful energy gave Cahir greater prominence. In addition, Richard and Emily were successful in their efforts to secure a Cavalry Barracks and a Dispensary for Cahir c.1810. The impact of this couple on the town’s physical and cultural heritage will be highlighted. We will also explore Emily’s interest in education of the townspeople of Cahir, most especially the women of the town, through an interview with the academic, 

Éilís O’Sullivan. Glengall would have known Charles Bianconi well from the latter’s early years in South Tipperary when he would have been friendly with the Baldwins of Cahir. The “Foxy Lord” also played a key role in the capture of the legendary highwayman, Willie Brennan, in 1810, further evidence of what a significant figure he had become in the area.
