Shallee Castle Conservation Project

This project is to produce a lectern-style information sign to be placed on the Mid-Clare way, adjacent to Shallee Castle, Kilnamona. The Castle is a late 15th century tower house which was associated with the O'Brien family. It is a striking landmark when driving from Ennis and indeed on the mid-Clare way itself.

This conservation project aims to raise awareness of this historic monument which is on the route of the Mid-Clare Way. Archaeologist Breda Ryan will work with local community groups and schools to research and collate the history of the Castle. This research will be presented on exhibition boards at the castle.

Clare County Council and Clare Heritage Office are working with the landowner with regard to making an application to the Community Monuments Fund for a Conservation Management Plan which will provide a road map to ensure the safety of the building. This will also facilitate safe and limited access to walkers on the mid-Clare way. In the interim the sign will provide some heritage information for walkers and interested parties.
