Shining A Light On Drug Related Breavement

Ireland has one of the highest rates of drug-related deaths in Europe, with approximately two lives lost every day. Behind these statistics are individuals—someone’s child, sibling, parent, or friend—whose families and loved ones are left to navigate a complex grief often overlooked by society.

In response, researchers from UCC’s School of Applied Psychology, in collaboration with local community groups, are commissioning artist Spicebag (aka Mála Spiosraí) to produce apublic artwork in Cork City to honour those lost and the families left behind. This artwork, part of World Overdose Prevention Day, will reflect the lived experiences of bereaved families, healthcare providers, and peers. It aims to raise awareness about the hidden sadness of drug-related deaths and shine a light on those affected.

Supported by Cork Simon, The Cork Alliance, The Recovery Academy, and The Traveller Visibility Group, the project will launch at UCC, where a projection will be screened for seven days. The projection will also be available for other events, giving voice to families impacted by drug-related bereavement.
