Silent Waltz: Work in Progress

This project explores the experience of dancing and how we remember it. The dances we went to, the steps we learned, the rhythm, the movement, the music and the community. Social dancing has a very important role in Glenfarne and its history over the last 80 years in the Rainbow Ballroom has been the soundtrack to dreams, to friendships, to romances, and to a community of people supporting one and other for generations. Róisín Loughrey, Michael McLoughlin and collaborators from the local dancing community in Glenfarne are developing audio and filmed work for presentation in the Rainbow Ballroom. On Culture Night between 5pm and 7pm Róisín and Michael will give a short talk about the artwork they make and have made in the past, but most importantly, they will give us a sneak preview into how the Silent Waltz project is developing. This is a chance to see what it is all about and to get involved yourself. While all are welcome, there are limited places available. There will also be a little dancing limited to 10 people.

The Silent Waltz is a work in progress that focuses on dance steps, how they are passed from generation to generation. It also draws on a particular piece of music that features in William Trevor’s short story Ballroom of Romance and danced to in his fictional ballroom based on the Rainbow; The Destiny Waltz by Sydney Baynes. The Destiny Waltz has been danced to by people for over 100 years now by generations of waltzers all over the world.
