“Sur les routes du Donegal”

Sur les routes du Donegal is a radio series focusing on the tradition of singing, music and story-telling from West Donegal. The series has been broadcasted on Breton radio RKB since 2020. RKB radio is rooted in the center of Brittany, France, a place with a strong tradition of songs and music. This third season of the show (4 episodes) is about collecting songs, music and stories in County Donegal. The episodes present West Donegal from a strong musical and cultural point of view to French listeners, each one digging in the archives (first episode in the National Folklore Collection, Dublin UCD), exploring the materials collected, the people who collected, talking to the people who are still collecting (Rónán Galvin, Lisa Shields, episodes 2 & 3), and those who use the archive in their music (Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh, episode 4). A substantial interest in the series goes to the Irish language and its preservation, depicting it not only through sean-nós but also through history, poetry, story-telling and literature, all of them being closely related to each other. The series also establishes an interesting cultural link between Brittany & Donegal, especially through the shared question of minority languages and through the tradition of singing. This link has been highlighted through a small sound expo about the radio series, installed in the local libraries around Gaoth Dobhair as well.
