The Pencil Is A Magic Wand is a creative arts project organised by Skibbereen Active Retired & Social Group, offering older adults the chance to explore art in a welcoming and supportive environment. Many participants grew up believing they “couldn’t draw” after being discouraged from pursuing art in school or at home. This project helps rebuild confidence and encourages creative expression through enjoyment rather than perfection.

Led by a professional teacher who is inspiring, encouraging and kind, weekly classes will introduce participants to drawing, painting and mixed-media techniques using affordable materials such as pencils, charcoal, watercolours, pastels and inks. Building on the group’s 2025 experience, members will continue developing their skills while exploring artistic concepts including rhythm, balance, contrast and unity.

Classes will take place at the Skibbereen Community & Family Resources Centre throughout spring and autumn 2026. New members are always welcome, no previous experience is necessary, and all materials will be provided. A small exhibition during the Bealtaine Festival may also showcase participants’ creative achievements.
