The Story of WB Yeats Nobel Prize Award

2023 is the Centenary of the Nobel Prize award to WB Yeats – the first Irish person to be recognised in this way. Yeats Society Sligo is the official partner with Department of TCAGSM to deliver a programme of events for this, the last event of the Decade of Centenaries. We are applying for CI Sligo funding to add value and extend one event which has already received funding from the TCAGSM umbrella. We have commissioned a short play, designed for 5th and 6th class students, to tell them the story of WB Yeats Nobel Prize award. The play is designed to deliver the story in an accessible and entertaining way for this age group. The commission is part of the Decade of Centenaries commission and will be distributed royalty free to schools, to encourage teachers and students to create their own performance. The play is 12-13 minutes duration. We would like to film a performance of the play to share with primary schools in Sligo – and possibly beyond. We believe this is a cost-efficient way of using TCAGSM funding, to add value to a project. We are passionate believers in passing on the great poetry tradition of Ireland to the coming generations. We already have an outreach programme with primary schools. We believe that the ‘seed of poetry’ can be planted at an early age and that young people naturally enjoy the rhythm and visual nuances of poetry.
