Thresholds

Thresholds is a documentary that takes a closer look at the professions of the Midwife and the Death Doula in County Laois. These are the people who guide us into the living world and support us through our final transition; from the cradle to the threshold of death.

Midwives and Death Doulas occupy vital roles, forming bookends to the human experience and weaving themselves into the fabric of the local Irish community. Midwives are the gentle custodians of beginnings, guiding families through the intimate and transformative journey of childbirth with care and expertise. They connect deeply with families, often becoming trusted confidants who celebrate life's first breaths.

In contrast, Death Doulas provide holistic emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and their families before, during, and after death. Working alongside medical teams and hospice staff, they help create a more peaceful, meaningful, and dignified end-of-life experience. Through compassionate presence, active listening, and guidance, they support people in navigating one of life's most profound transitions, helping families prepare for, understand, and process loss.

Together, these professions not only serve essential functions but also embody the resilience, compassion, and humanity of a community at its most vulnerable and transformative moments. Deeply rooted in Iris
