Thresholds
Thresholds is a documentary, which takes a closer look at the professions of the Midwife and the Undertaker in County Laois. These are the people that guide us into the living world, and through to our demise; from the cradle to the grave. Midwives and Undertakers occupy vital roles, forming bookends to the human experience and weaving themselves into the fabric of the local Irish community. Midwives are the gentle custodians of beginnings, guiding families through the intimate and transformative journey of childbirth with care and expertise. They connect deeply with families, often becoming trusted confidants, who celebrate life’s first breaths.
On the other hand, Undertakers shepherd and comfort families in times of loss and grief, helping families navigate the process of saying goodbye. Together, these professions not only serve essential functions but also embody the resilience and compassion of the community and its most vulnerable and profound moments, with empathy and presence. Deeply rooted in Irish culture, these roles in birth and death reflect the strong communal bonds and rituals that have been passed down through generations, preserving the traditions that define the heart of local communities in County Laois and in Ireland.
