Trail Tour - A Town Reads Mitchell
As part of Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival, Birr-based artist Rosalind Fanning presents an introduction to the life and work of poet, mystic and author Susan Langstaff Mitchell, whose centenary is being commemorated this year in both Birr and Dublin. The event will also feature a musical interpretation of one of Mitchell's poems performed by songwriter Remco Jacobs.
The walking tour will take place on Tuesday 4 August at 2.30pm, meeting outside Birr Post Office, Emmet Square. From there, participants will follow a route through Birr to Camcor Park, crossing the river and returning through the town, with stops for readings of six of Mitchell's poems along the way.
At approximately 3.30pm, the tour will arrive at St. Brendan's Church of Ireland, where the event will continue with a programme of performed poetry, two of Mitchell's satirical songs, and congregational singing of two or three hymns inspired by ancient Irish poetry, some of which may have been sung at her funeral.
The event will conclude with refreshments served at St. Brendan's Church of Ireland, Oxmantown Mall. The indoor programme will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
