Weaving the Threads of Heritage: Connecting Local History and The Arts
This project aims to preserve and elevate Fingal’s rich textile manufacturing legacy through a collaborative arts and local heritage initiative. A group of artists will create original artworks inspired by the area's history, and also a number of unique artefacts originating from the Smyth & Co. hosiery factory, formerly based in Balbriggan. These artefacts serve as direct witnesses to Balbriggan's vibrant social history spanning two centuries, from 1780 to 1980.
This project aims to highlight Balbriggan’s national, cultural, and socio-historical significance, pointing at its global connections through the fame of Balbriggan stockings. These stockings, sought after by prestigious clientele including Queen Victoria and other European royalty, gained recognition for their exceptional quality and regularly won prizes at international world fairs across the world.
The process will leverage the diverse range of art forms and techniques represented by the group of artists, ranging from fabric and embroidery, to abstract art and video. This diversity is further enhanced by the mixed cultural backgrounds of the participants, which is reflective of the current demographics of Balbriggan and the greater Fingal area. This collaborative artistic initiative will culminate in a public art exhibition and related workshops, aiming to contribute to the idea of place-making and fostering cohesion among both, new and old, inhabitants of Fingal and beyond.
Dates of Exhibition and Workshops TBC.
