The Young Basketmakers of Leitrim

Blending old with new, traditional with modern, North Connaught Youth Services (NCYS) has teamed up with Helena Golden Willow Woman to deliver The Young Basketmakers Project throughout Leitrim.

North Connaught Youth Service offers support to young people in the form of planned activities and programmes with the aim of empowering young people to develop a range of skills that will enhance their social, physical and educational development.

In response to a growing interest in traditional forms of craft, Helena Golden Willow Woman has developed Willow Weaving Kits containing Pre-Soaked Willow, wooden jig, illustrated instructions and a Video Tutorial. Each kit will enable the weaver to make 3 - 4 little baskets, ideally suited for use as Bird Feeders or Garlic Holders in the kitchen.

This project Is a wonderful example of blending old with new as it empowers young people to explore their creativity in a modern platform whilst learning a heritage craft and keeping the beautiful craft of Basketry alive.
