Brigid 1500: artistic tribute with stunning copper foil cloak and community festival

In Louth, home of the birthplace of Saint Brigid, a remarkable project is unfolding to commemorate the 1500th anniversary of this beloved Irish saint.

Artists and participants in the Brigid 1500 programme are exploring and creating a collection of art using various materials, textures, and mediums, all inspired by the life and virtues of Saint Brigid.

At the forefront of this creative initiative is the crafting of a stunning cloak made from copper foil circles, paying homage to the enduring legacy of Saint Brigid and her deep connection to the town of Faughart.

The choice of copper is significant, as it symbolises Saint Brigid’s association with the metalwork trade, making her the patroness of blacksmiths.

The cloak, funded by Creative Ireland and Louth County Council Arts Office, was designed and facilitated by artist Shauna Swords, and created by the students of St Brigid’s School, Dundalk. Each copper foil circle has been specially cut and hand-stencilled, and woven into vibrant, shimmering strands which are then combined to create a stunning, life-sized cloak.

As part of the Brigid 1500 Festival, the Artist in the Community programme, funded by Creative Ireland and comprised of a team of talented artists led by Grainne Murphy of Creative Spark Print Studios, has embarked on a unique and extraordinary artistic endeavour.

This dynamic team includes: Susan Farrelly and Una Curley, both renowned textile and mixed media artists; Claire McAteer, a gifted textile and print artist, and Etaoin O’Reilly, a talented ceramics artist.

Together, they are delving deep into the rich history and lore of Saint Brigid.

The creative team, under Grainne’s visionary leadership, has been conducting a series of workshops in collaboration with various community groups and schools. These workshops serve as a melting pot of ideas, blending traditional techniques with contemporary innovation.

"Together, they have embarked on an artistic journey that delves deep into the rich history and lore of Saint Brigid."

The Brigid 1500 festival will run from Friday, the 26th of January 2024 until Monday the 5th of February 2024. All artwork created from the Brigid 1500 Artist in the Community Project, as well as the exquisite Saint Brigid’s cloak, will be on display in various locations around the county.
