€600,000 awarded to creative projects for older people nationwide

The projects will be rolled out this year by the Creative Ireland Programme through its partnership with local authorities.

Highlights of the projects that have received funding include:

  • The Carlow Men’s Sheds and Active Retired Associations will work with an artist to undertake a survey of all the holy wells in the county. Alongside this project, a filmmaker will produce a documentary that will reflect the meaningful nature of these historic sites to the people of the county.
  • In Cavan members of Cavan Older People’s Council will create a new piece of drama with an experienced theatre practitioner.
  • Clare County Council’s Age Friendly Clare and Healthy Clare teams will partner with Cuimhneamh an Chlair, the IFA are and the HSE’s National Office of Suicide Prevention to host creative workshops in five Farmer’s Marts throughout the county.
  • Dún Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council will continue its important work in area of Creative Dementia inclusivity with training for arts practitioners working in this sector, awareness raising workshops in partnership with the Global Brain Health Institute. They will also host a series of one to one creativity and arts sessions with people living with dementia and/or carers together in their homes. The programme will be completed with multisensory arts-based work for people living with dementia in two residential care settings.
  • Over the summer, artists will be commissioned to work with six cross border Residential Healthcare Facilities in both Co. Donegal and Derry City and Strabane District Council local authorities that will culminate in a finished art or craft piece.
  • Fingal County Council will host a Vintage Music and Arts Festival for older people in the beautiful setting of the restored Swords Castle.  
  • The “Cupán Ceoil Tea Dances’’ in Galway project will integrate elements of social outings, music, dance, crafting and food to promote positive mental health and social connection amongst older adults especially those who are isolated.
  • Galway County Council will introduce “The Rhythm of Life” by Drumadore a 10-week drumming programme for people in their older people. They will also host a series of mural art installations delivered by artist Mo Robinson.
  • Mayo’s Art for Older People at Home Hearth 2023 in Achill, Ballinrobe and Castlebar will engage three artists to work with participants once a week in their own homes. They will each receive a set of art materials to enable them to develop their own creative projects.
  • Roscommon County Council will engage a curate to programme five day-time performing arts events at the Roscommon Arts Centre, King House Boyle, Douglas Hyde Centre Frenchpark, Trinity Arts Centre Castlerea and Strokestown Park House & Famine Museum featuring local artists.
  • Sligo County Council will host workshops for older people that will work towards the creation of original artworks based on the theme of ‘Local’ which will all be showcased at end of project exhibition at City Hall.

The Creative Ireland Creativity in Older Age programme will also support a comprehensive programme of live musical performances in healthcare settings in Carlow, Cork, Donegal, Fingal, Galway, Dublin, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, Longford, Louth Meath, Monaghan, Cavan, Offaly, South Dublin, Waterford, Westmeath and Waterford County Council.
