‘A Sound Initiative’ is a free instrument loan scheme which has been expanded greatly with thanks to the Creative Ireland Programme. This scheme allows anyone to borrow an instrument free of charge and try it out before making a potentially expensive purchase.

An instrument can be ordered by placing a request at your local branch/mobile library.
Have you longed to learn a musical instrument but didn’t want to commit to the purchase of an expensive instrument in case it didn’t suit you?

‘A Sound Initiative’ is a program intended to allow people to test their skills on a particular instrument before investing a significant amount of money on an instrument of their own.

An instrument can be ordered by placing a request at your local branch of Cork County Library. Instruments may be borrowed for up to 3 weeks and may be renewed if no-one else has placed a request for it.
Donations of musical instruments are greatly appreciated.

The scheme has proven very popular with waiting lists for many of the instruments and over 700 loans to date. The collection is now at over 140 instruments from banjos to violins and will facilitate expansion of the scheme including block loans to schools and workshops in libraries going forward.
