Basant/ Kite Flying Festival 2024

Basant is one of the most celebrated festivals in the Indian Subcontinent, associated with spring and the color yellow. While Basant holds religious significance in Hinduism, marking the arrival of spring, it has become popular across all cultures in the region. During this time, the landscape is adorned with the vibrant yellow hues of vast mustard and sunflower fields, and locals traditionally dress in yellow while engaging in kite flying activities amidst the harvest season after a quiet winter.

In Ireland, since 2022, the Basant Festival has been an annual event at Carrigaline Community Park in County Cork in support of Cork County Council. A large number of participants enthusiastically join the event to fly kites and are encouraged to dress in yellow attire.

This year  the festival will be expanded by incorporating dance, drama, food, art workshops, in addition to the kite flying activities that will be organised on Saturday 1st June 2024 at Carrigaline Community Park and Complex.
